films
A small representative selection of recent films that include paid commissions, community projects, and artistic exploration. I have been making personal, artistic and documentary films for over 20 years using both DLSR and the smartphone.
Between Us - Birmingham Portraits
A series of intimate portraits of people in Birmingham City Centre. The film follows the street photography tradition capturing everyday scenes from daily life. The film is shot entirely in slow motion, allowing the audience to reflect and connect with those recorded.
To be home - stirchley
A series of intimate portraits of people in Birmingham City Centre. The film follows the street photography tradition capturing everyday scenes from daily life. The film is shot entirely in slow motion, allowing the audience to reflect and connect with those recorded.
Made as part of the Inhabit Artist Commission in 2014, this is one of three films focussing on the different areas of Birmingham. Stirchley is a fast-changing village with a rich history of community and commerce. The film features a series of audio interviews with residents speaking about their own connection with the village. The voices are sequenced together with a series of static shots of people and scenes from everyday life. It was originally presented as a 3-screen projection installation and then reedited for this single-screen version.
keepers of the light
A film that explores the connection between the Black Country town of Smethwick, Chances Glass Factory and the lighthouse of Portland Bill, Dorset. Produced as part of the wider project Keepers of the Light developed with artist and writer Brendan Jackson, the film is a homage to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of Chances Glass and the lighthouse division and the life of Chances’ lens installed at Portland Bill Lighthouse.
The film features recorded interviews with former employees, historians, community enthusiasts and lighthouse keepers combined with newly recorded and archival film and photography.
Chance Glassworks
Commissioned by Chance Heritage Trust to mark the Bicentenary of Chances Glassworks in Smethwick. The film combined a diversity of perspectives from stakeholders and community members on what is the legacy of Chances Glass. It also advocates for why the former Glasswork site should be repurposed in a way that keeps a strong connection to its industrial heritage while providing a much-needed live-work resource for the local area.
Encounters along the road
A film produced as part of a journey by bike along the West Coast of Scotland in 2016. Along the way, local residents were recorded inviting them to share what home means to be them.
